Summer Skelves !
Castle Howard 2020
The Brief
Summer 2020 provided us with a challenge in developing the Skelf stories – due to government guidelines no groups could be gathered even outside. Could we, Castle Howard asked, find a way to enhance the family offer in the grounds that Summer, whilst keeping audiences safe?
What We Did
We created a new format in which family groups could discover the Skelves both at their own pace, and distanced from performers and other audience members. Taking the opportunity to launch two new Skelf characters – Moss and Luna – we created five Skelf habitats on a trail near Skelf Island . These habitats would remain in situ throughout the Summer and on key dates, would be animated by the Skelves. Families would visit the Skelves and help them with their magic – including potion making with Rowan, weather spells with Oaken and story tapestries with Luna.
The Result
The events ran smoothly and safely and provided families with a much needed injection of theatrical fun in the open air throughout the Summer.
“I met a family three times on separate weekends, who came back and said it made their weekend to see me, and in our second interaction I’d given them a ‘mermaid hair’ bracelet. They came back again today, wearing their bracelets, and mum said they have put them on everyday since getting them”
