Lantern Event at Skipton Castle Woods
The Woodland Trust 2017
The Brief
It was at one of our Wizarding Adventures at Sewerby Hall that an audience member made herself known to us – she was visitor experience manager at a Woodland Trust site – would we be able to deliver family events at Skipton Castle Woods with her? Specifically, in the brand new lantern event planned for Autumn 2017.
What We Did
We worked with Hazel to create character interactions which directly responded to the heritage of the woods as a place of industry. Surrounding Skipton Castle, the woods had played host over the centuries to medieval poaching, quarrying and forges and were intrinsically linked to the livelihoods of working people. We created a narrative involving a poacher out after dark, and a mythological enchanted tree – creating three stations for audiences to interact with the story on their journey through the woods, which were lit with lanterns for the evening.
The Result
The event was a huge success with audiences and following successful delivery in 2017, we were asked back in 2018 and 2019 to help develop and expand the scope of the event.

“I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing Rusticus as both an event attendee and as an event organiser. Hugely entertaining and very professional – they bring the outdoors alive for little people. Go see them”
