The Nutcracker Story !

Blenheim Palace 2021

The Brief

Following the success of the Surprise Encounters with Father Christmas for Culture Creative in 2020, we were asked to help animate the indoor spaces at Blenheim Palace in Christmas 2021. How could we provide a meaningful interaction for visitors despite potentially large numbers of through-put and short dwell times-  in the Nutcracker Story, specifically the Land of Toys?

What We Did

Our creative approach was to collaborate with choreographer Rachel Fullegar to design a series of play interactions that relied on movement and dance, rather than script. We cast physical performers and worked on playful improvisations which responded to the fantastic set dressing in the Long Gallery whilst respecting the historical significance of the environment in which we were performing.

The Result

Audiences were able to interact with our Sugar Plum Fairies and Nutcracker Soldiers for as long or short as they were comfortable whilst moving through the space. The interactions were inter-generational and we gained excellent feedback from audiences of all ages, whilst successfully animating the space for a total of 48 days in November and December.
