The Camping & Caravanning Club

The Brief

Dubbed ‘the friendly club’ The Camping & Caravanning Club share many of the same values as Rusticus, and we were put in touch by a mutual contact in 2018 who felt that we were the company who could help bring to life those shared values for family audiences. Following fruitful discussions we were commissioned by the Camping & Caravanning Club team to create a series of interactions which shone a spotlight on the Club’s unique heritage and to present them at the brand activation stand at a Summer festivals during 2018.

What We Did

We were in the fortunate position of being able to plunder the fantastic archives of the Club in order to create the work. This research enabled us to create two charismatic characters: Nipper Chris – a composite character drawn the first cycle camping pioneers who represented the freedom of being outdoors in all weathers, and Elsie Wallace – a real member of the club from its early days in the 1920s who wrote articles full of smart ingenious camping ideas for the club magazine. Chris and Elsie were designed to engage families with traditional camping values – the art of an efficient pack, family time, and camping cuisine through games, quizzes and fun physical activities, before drawing them further into the stand to engage with the brand.

The Result

We animated the stand successfully in highly competitive environments – Chris & Elsie’s talents were enjoyed by audiences at The Motorhome and Caravan Show, NEC Birmingham in Oct 2018, Countryfile Live  at Blenheim Palace in Aug 2018, and the Eroica Festival, Bakewell in June 2018 – successfully creating a buzz around the club and drawing people to engage with the brand and to ultimately increase sign-up of membership at the event.
