We first got a call from Shaun at Greenhill Primary, Wakefield, back in 2014. He wanted to talk about Book Nights. They don’t do them by half at Greenhill Primary – they have two every year – and they’re a bit legendary. To give you a flavour.. since we’ve been involved I’ve witnessed them transforming their school dining hall into a Narnian forest – complete with entrance through a wardrobe of fur coats, we’ve seen fire-eaters on the playground and a unicorn round the back of the bike shelter. All the staff throw themselves into the events and dressing up is compulsory. For our first event we performed our ‘Come Outside’ show – a Rusticus Adventure adapted for schools which celebrates the heritage of their school grounds in our larger than life style – we had golfing with apples, flying with the airman and plenty of silliness. Shaun was delighted – he loved the mixture of unpredictability and creativity it offered to the children. He spoke about how children rarely feel wonder or risk anymore – how everything is at their fingertips. And thus, our partnership was born! We’ve now provided afternoon workshops and evening performances animating their grounds at Book Nights celebrating Tolkein, Cressida Carre, Roald Dahl, Julia Donaldson, C S Lewis, Hans Christian Anderson – and June sees us turn our creative minds in the direction of David Walliams. We’ve loved being part of the occasion – whether its training our latest shipment of chickens to avoid Fantastic Mr Fox, going on an icy adventure to Narnia in the dark in November (with real catapulting ice battles against the White Witch) or bringing the BFG into the foundation stage for the gentlest of giant adventures!
