Who we are

…is a provider of  fresh-air adventures for visitors to any venue – a combination of interactive performance, and a good old walk in the great outdoors!

We prided ourselves in the high quality of our work, which is designed by founding directors Rebecca Jenkins and Jonathan Stokes, who since 2009 have used their years of professional theatre experience to create exciting experiences which celebrate the outdoor spaces of a variety of visitor attractions and heritage sites.

Over that time, Rusticus has built a strong track record of working in partnership with our clients to understand their specific needs, and support them in developing both a  fun, engaging offer for families and a growing loyal audience.

From its beginnings, the Rusticus style has been to take a fun, fresh and irreverent approach, making an accessible and engaging experience in which families play together in the great outdoors, and take happy memories away with them. From local history in a Derby park to bardic expression at Bridlington Poetry Festival, Rusticus has built on these early commissions to form long-standing and positive partnerships with a variety of venues across Yorkshire – and our reputation is still growing!

Jon is an actor, director and writer. He loves most to improvise interactive fun with audiences of all shapes and sizes – and enjoys bringing a flavour of the “Forest School” ethos into Rusticus events – using outdoor spaces as stimuli for fun activities! He’s a firm believer in the power of laughter (being a fan of comedy, and all things comic), and his robust comic style lends itself to our open air events, as well as to his other specialism – delivering impactful and engaging training events (for which he leaves the pith helmet at home..)

Rebecca is mainly actor (often but not always with a cello in hand) and director (of actors, of singers, of members of the community) with a penchant for event curating and project management, including the 2012 Beverley Literature Festival. Recently she has dabbled in policy and is currently a member of the East Riding Cultural Partnership and LEADER Action Group for the Coast, Wolds, Wetlands and Waterways area.

As well as running Rusticus, you will find both Rebecca and Jonathan continuing to perform in our events.  If Jon and Rebecca are out of the area then Rusticus employ a talented and trusted pool of creatives, some of whom we’ve known for years, others plucked fresh from the local talent pool.

I was working on an exhibition stand at the Birmingham NEC all last week alongside two of your actors (Jack and Rachel). I just wanted to comment on how wonderfully entertaining they were as Nipper and Elsa. The adorable characters were hilariously improvised by these two extremely witty, talented and likeable actors. Well done!
