We’re Potty About Hornsea !
Hornsea & Area Renaissance Partnership 2015
The Brief
Rusticus were commissioned in 2015 for the community engagement phase of this exciting public art project designed to celebrate the iconic designs and craft of the world-famous Hornsea Pottery.
What We Did
Rusticus carried out a period of community engagement within Hornsea in order to connect local people with the project – including visiting schools with a creative workshop, forging links with local societies and individuals, and creating the successful public event ‘Wacky Walk: We’re Potty About Hornsea’! This interactive performance saw areas of the town centre animated by larger-than-life characters who all feature in aspects of the town’s heritage. Working with a steering group from the local business community, we helped to commission a local artist, ceramicist Adele Howitt, to realise the group’s shared ambition for a trail of sculptures in the town centre which celebrate the iconic designs of Hornsea Pottery.
The Result
The success of the community engagement phase contributed to a successful bid for further funding which saw chosen artist, ceramicist Adele Howitt create and deliver a new public art trail – Potter About Hornsea, which launched in Autumn 2017. The trail has contributed to a visually improved town centre which celebrates the iconic Hornsea designs and draws visitors to the town. In addition, the community engagement had another successful outcome – the opening of a new Pottery studio at Hornsea School & Language College!
“Great idea keeping Hornsea pottery alive!”
